Kung Fu
Beginning, Past & Present

Kung Fu is one of the oldest fighting arts known to mankind. The date of its origin has been lost to antiquity. The term Kung Fu is a term coined by the Chinese who migrated to the United States in the 1800's during the California Gold Rush era and the building of the transcontinental Railroad.

There are many meanings of the term Kung Fu. The term Kung Fu means "Hard Work or Task" or "Always learning". Kung Fu has been practiced and revised in China for over 4000 years. It has evolved into an implement for health and self-defense.

According to orthodox beliefs, Shaolin Systems fall into two major divisions: Those that support Northern Shaolin and those that make Southern Shaolin the center of their activity. Northern Shaolin is believed to have originated at the Hunan Temple, while Southern Shaolin is believed to have come from the Fukien Temple. In their basic technique patterns, both Northern and Southern brands of Shaolin make use of the five animal fist forms: Dragon, Crane, Tiger, Snake, and Leopard.
It is generally accepted that northern styles maintain more kicking techniques and the southern styles excel in the hand techniques.

To achieve the nature of complete wholeness, one must find a true balance and train accordingly. To train the mind and not the body would leave the practitioner physically weak. To train the body and not the mind would leave a void most needed to achieve the status of WARRIOR. Among animals, the survival of the fittest is law. Among people, those who triumph are those who excel both physically and mentally. So not only is Mon Lung Kung Fu an excellent form of conditioning the body and a proven form of self-defense, it is also a standard by which one can live.
